General Information

Large hub airports located in North America have unique operational and challenges during the winter season. As the air transportation system continues to rebuild and grow, the safe and efficient operation of these hubs becomes even more critical. To address these issues, the Wayne County Airport Authority, the American Association of Airport Executives and the Northeast Chapter AAAE present the Ninth Annual Large Hub Winter Operations Conference, July 19-21, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn.

This annual conference will bring together airports, airlines, consultants, manufacturers and key FAA officials to discuss and debate the latest technology and techniques in large hub airport winter operations. Through detailed presentations, technology updates and informative roundtable discussions, this conference will allow key airport, airline and air traffic control decision-makers to address complex issues surrounding winter operations at large hub airports. Various 2008-2009 winter operations scenarios also will be evaluated and discussed.

Topics during this two-day conference will include case studies, a climatologist’s review of environmental issues related to snow and ice, NIMS compliance during winter operations, the pros and cons of airport chemical use, next generation technology, the economics of crew scheduling, and challenges of operating in snow and low visibility. Detroit Metro Airport officials also will provide an overview and tour of their winter operation facilities.

All sessions will take place at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn. The conference will begin with a welcome reception from 7:00-8:30 p.m. (registration begins at 6:30 p.m.) on Sunday, July 19, and will end at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21. Registration fees include the welcome reception, a Monday night event (Ford Museum), two lunches, two continental breakfasts, breaks and all handout materials.
